Hello, and welcome.  This web site provides information about the lives, music, and links to lots of information about musicians, both well known and not so well known that have resided and performed in the mountains of Southwestern Virginia over the years.  We hope you'll enjoy browsing all the information that is available here and that you might enjoy the music enough to support our cause of promoting mountain musicians  and the music of these local musicians (of all styles) plus our own "ROOTS" music (not necessarily that written long ago by someone else).  You'll find this site to be a rather unusual concoction of information and different venues of music.  We all do love bluegrass (which  is based in our Irish ancestry).   And... more than anyone in this country ,  mountain people here do own those songs which were written and passed down in these mountains for decades or even centuries.  But we can also lay claim to a good number of those fantastic Rockabilly, Rock 'n Roll, Blues, Pop Country/Western, and Jazz tunes that have been around for so long,  and we can be especially proud of the ones in those venues which were written and/or performed by good ole mountain folk (and there are certainly more than you might imagine!).  We encourage everyone to be open-minded and to love and enjoy all styles of GOOD  music

Guy Lucian Priode was born Jan. 13, 1942 in Clintwood, Virginia. Lucian devoted a great portion of his life to Wise County Public Schools as the Band Director of J. J. Kelly High School, having received accolades and awards for his work at innumerable levels. He was a wonderfully talented person. However, part of his talent was cracking everyone up. He had such a "cool" sense of humor. I believe he was the original "Fonzie".
Play sweet, Lucian.

A beaming Lucian Priode, 58, of Wise sidled up to get his picture taken with Pinkneys. When Priode was growing up, the radio waves were filled with hit numbers by The Drifters and The Temptations. "Oh, it's a thrill and an honor to meet Bill Pinkneys," Priode said through a smile that would probably last all day. "I enjoyed him and The Drifters for many, many, many years. And, I still do. I'll always remember this moment. This is special."

The Lucian Priode Instrument Fund Establishment

The J.J. Kelly Band Boosters have established the "Lucian Priode Instrument Fund" in honor of former J.J. Kelly Band Director and educator Lucian Priode. Many alumni have inquired as to how they can contribute to the band in honor of the memory of Mr. Priode. All donations will be deposited into a fund that will be created to provide instruments and instrument needs for members of the J.J. Kelly Band program. Donations can be sent to:

Honoring Mr. Lucian Priode

On Tuesday December 2, 2008, Christmas Parades in Coeburn, Wise and Norton, the J.J. Kelly High School "Pride of the Tribe" Marching Indian Band honored the memory of Mr. Lucian Priode. All band members marching in the parades wore a black ribbon to honor the memory of Mr. Priode, who passed away on November 28, 2008 due to illness. It was the hope of the band to honor his memory and to rekindle memories with citizens in all towns in Wise County, the impact of Mr. Lucian Priode on music programs at J.J. Kelly High School and Wise County.

Lucian was my friend, plain and simple, and he was a faithful friend, not only to me but to a lot of others.  I miss his good humor and his devotion and love for good music.  It was a joy just to sit and talk about and listen to the best of music with him.  He maintained a good sound system and a good variety of the best music on albums, tapes and cds.  He always seemed to enjoy my company. We would sit in his office at school, sneak a cigarette,  and talk, or I would drop by his home.  We played a few gigs together when either he or I would be picked up by a band to fill in for someone, but we were never in a band together.  One of the projects we did together was an album that we recorded of his very excellent high school Concert and Jazz band at J.J. Kelly High School.  The taping was done at a concert featuring his Jazz Band and also featuring the great local artist, Glenn Smith.  I hope Lucian Priode will be remembered as not only a musician, but also as one of the finest music educators to pass our way.
